The Fall of British Pudding
The 1970’s were a dark time for desserts, a dark time indeed. Those old enough to remember will tell your stories of how it was back then. A period where Nouvelle cuisine reigned supreme, where every restaurant and chef was trying this new-fangled technique for food preparation. “All of the chefs in France are doing it”, proponents of Novell would cry out, whenever questions over portion and tradition were size raised.
The shift towards lighter, delicate, and artsy food meant that there was no place in the culinary world for humble British puddings. Think about it, these so-called “qualities” stand in the face of what make the British pudding great. And they’re great because they’re warm, filling, and excessive! These are qualities our forefathers enjoyed as they were the perfect foil for murky British weather. As such, it was a shame that our backs turned on them as staples such as sticky toffee, jam rolly poly, and crumble left menu’s, in favour tiny cheesecake slices and gateau. Nobody knew if British puds would ever return…
Rise Of The Pudding…Club
A lot of people can appreciate a decent looking meal, but there reaches a point where presentation can become exhaustive and detrimental. This is especially true with desserts, which are meant to serve as satiation after the main course. In 1985, entrepreneurs Keith and Jean Turner saw the state of the pudding industry and embarked on a crusade to restore it to its former glory. They embolden this mission with the diatribe “lashings of custard” which is coupled with every desert. This aptly sums up what was missing for all those years. Good old fashioned, warm custard.
This simply isn’t a pudding café though, it is a club as is envisaged by its name. The club is located in the Three Ways House Hotel in Cotswold village where meetings are held every Friday. These are available to anyone with a sweet tooth and a hankering for classic British desserts.
So, just what are these meetings about? “It sounds like a cult” I hear you say. Well, there are pudding masters, rolling pin gavels, and indiscriminate bouts of cheering for pudding, so I suppose those fears aren’t unfounded. But, what it boils down to is a jovial and unique celebration of pudding, where visitors enjoy a seven-course meal which is solely comprised of scrumptious British desserts. The challenge is a huge draw and the club is jam-packed every Friday with visitors from all over the UK and even some who have come from abroad.
A Delicious Evening At The Club
These evenings are eccentric and incredibly good fun. They start in the evening where guests can mingle and enjoy a light meal. This is shortly followed by the grand spectacle of the pudding parade. The pomp and pageantry on display routinely lead to infectious laughter and cheering as each pudding is announced and brought out on platters. Sticky Toffee never fails to make the biggest applause. Once the seven courses are on the tables, the pudding master announces the rules. You can have one bowl, and once you finish it you can have another pudding! After that, all bets are off as guests ruminate over tactics and strategy on the best way to tackle the course. Some pudding experts may be able to handle all seven courses and more, some might have their forehead sunken on the table after the third course. Whatever happens, everyone wins as all guests get a certificate which chronicles the momentous achievement.
The Pudding Club is a dessert experience like no other. Whether you’re a connoisseur or casual appreciator of pudding, you’ll be in for a fun and electric evening. After the course, you can even stay for the night at the pudding themed hotel rooms which will be the perfect way to recover after a puddingy night on the town.
